moar on tdk b/c i can't sleep
I looked up stuff on Two-Face b/c I still believe in Harvey Dent, you know. While watching the movie I hella thought they were going to do the Two-Face reveal and cut, so that he would be the villain in the next movie. I felt a little bereft at his death at the end of the movie but after reading up, I feel even more >:[. He is such an interesting character and an interesting villain. I really like the idealist one true hope figures, because I am sentimental. But it goes so wrong and that is really devastating to me, even though I suppose it's easiest for the ideals to slip. That extreme sense of justice being so perverted and turned in on itself, justice without any moral infrastructure to back it up. THAT'S SAD. The comics have a backstory of child abuse and schizophrenia, further compounding the Two Face thing, and if you slot that behind TDK's Harvey Dent, then you can see that potential, something unsettled and sliding behind his eyes. Not to say that Eckhart's performance didn't already build naturally to the fall, just that knowing the backstory punches out a whole new dimension. And to me it textures (wtf? terrible word choice) him going bugshit over Rachel; it makes it come across more motivated. Where Rachel was more than just a fiancee hopeful, she was the family he chose, and the one he had to hold onto.
SADDEST: in the comics Two-Face is the villain that Batman desperately wants to help, not lock up. That's fucking tragic. SERIOUSLY. OMG. They would've killed me twice over every second if they let Two-Face live and have that be one of the throughlines of the third movie. I'm really sad that they shut that whole avenue down. It would've broken my heart, but in a good way? I don't know. I have a super super limited knowledge of comic book universes, but Two-Face was always one of my preferred villains. Sigh. Okay.
brb looking up pictures of stupid Aaron Eckhart's rectangle face :d
PS: I regret missing the boat on signing up for all the Batman newsletters 4 years before this movie came out or whatever. I WANT A HARVEY DENT PIN AND STICKER.
