The Terror s1

I'm watching the Terror and I can't think of a show that felt as foreign to me than this. Not in structure or style, but everything about its content is quite new to me. The time period (1840s), the setting (the Arctic), the... everything (Boat Life, navy life, WHAT ARE ANYONE'S NAMES?????). It's intriguing and I feel like I could like it a lot if I just understood more, lol. Can these characters say each other's names, at least???? Also there are too many Jameses/Johns.

The second season takes place in a Japanese internment camp with a majority Japanese/Japanese-American cast, so I'm eager to get to that (though I know it's an anthology show and I don't need to watch the first season to understand the second).

ep. 1: oh this is spooky
ep. 3: can't wait to see all these english sons of bitches get wreckt

I concentrated hard and now I know about four more names: Blanky, Little, Dr. MacDonald, and Jopson. (though I only recognize Little and Jopson by process of elimination.) Sadly I like/appreciate all of them. It's a testament to how competent Mr. Blanky is that I never realized the ridiculousness of his name until I typed it out in this tweet, lol

Combined with how things are getting even bleaker, I'm back to feeling sad that everyone is going to die grueling deaths T___T

faces without names: other doctor who was in rogue one, the guy who assists him, guy who was reading a book, the lieutenant on erebus, the guy with the skull injury, his marine bff, hickey's ex-bf, really beardy guy
names without faces: des voeux, tozer, evans, bridgens, dunby, hodgson

I know who Collins is but I don't know his job and he shows up real randomly.

The samey-ness and anonymity of the men is deliberate to a certain extent, and as the numbers dwindle different characters rise in prominence, etc. Still I think they are overestimating my specific ability to tell these people apart. omg is it ever disorienting

I appreciate Little because, even though he has no discernible personality, he just looks so utterly depressed about everything and it makes him a relatable straight man.

liveblogging episode 6

- hickey is such a sociopath T___T i feel sf nervous when he's on screen
- oh god, i thought this guy was tozer but it's not! tozer is a marine! so what's this guy's name??? i thought i was close to getting the characters straight finally T____T
- this lead poisoning thing is sf depressing. they never catch a break.
- no one ever says the rogue one doctor's name, maybe bc he's such a raging asshole
- OH MY GOD WHAT IS THE ASSHOLE DOCTOR DOING??????????!!!!!!!!
- OH GOD THEY REALLY CANNOT CATCH A BREAK. THIS IS HORRIFYINGGGG
- OH MY GOD DR. MACDONALD NO!!!! JESUS CHRIST
- i legitimately feel traumatized by that. holy hell. and that episode is called "A Mercy"

Some things that are humbling:
- As a whole, their determination to live and to work
- That they take diligent care of the skull injury guy (still don't know his name), and the one guy who was so panicked and upset when everyone was pushing at the tent - "no! stop! you're crushing him!" T____T

jfc that last episode is going to stay on my mind for a while. It makes me think of reading wiki articles about the tragedies that led to fire code regulations

I do fervently wish that name tags had been invented and widely used by the British Royal Navy in the 1840s. I STILL do not know this beardy guy's name. Why weren't you Tozer!!!!! I thought you were Tozer for two episodes!!!! speak your name, beardy guy!!!!!

I am too nervous to watch ep. 7 without reading ahead ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ

I got Julian to watch the next two episodes with me lol

ep 7: I was SO AFRAID that they would resort to cannibalism in this episode, and they didn't, yet the dread was so high that it kind of felt like they did anyway. And a totally different, even more appalling thing happened at the end ;;;;;

ep. 8: As the horror increases, so does the depth of the tender moments ;;;

liveblogging the last two episodes:
- no matter how many times i see it, the opening is sf good
- oh god, fitzjames ;;;;;;;;
- glad that little is still with the main camp
- hickey never has the full picture and is unintelligent with his manipulations, but he still survives. augh
- love dr. goodsir being contemptuous and unpitying of the mutiny boat
- OMG HICKEY YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE
- oh god the command meeting is so small now.
- nooooo fitzjames ;;;;;;;;;;; oh god he's going to die right here ;;;;;;;;
- a very sad and beautiful death. he had a choice, it was done with tenderness
- mr. blanky noooooooooooo ;;;;;;;;;
- poor francis. "jesus christ" indeed
- we're in the endgame now. all the deaths will be honorable from here on out.
- oh this joyful moment of friendship btwn francis and blanky. oh it's so painful and wonderful ;;;;;;;;;;
- NO NOT HENRY TOO! oh my GOD this episode. it's not even 30 minutes yet!!! poor bridgens. i'm fucking dying.
- DIE HICKEY DIE!!! I HAVE NO PATIENCE FOR YOU. so much loss. aughhhhhhhhhhhh
- don't you make goodsir do anything, you horrible man.......
- i'm steaming with hatred. goodsir ;;;; FUCK YOU TOO TOZER
- "[Optimistic music building]" don't fuck with me show, i'm delicate ;;;;;;;;;

- grumble, i'm glad you're enjoying this, you fucking horrible man.
- WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU TOZER??? you were so kind to your skull injury guy friend.

- jopson too ; n ;
- BETRAYAL
- ohhh god WHY
- your word means nothing, you murdering bastard. oh god i am seethinnnnnggggg
- oh bridgens ;;;;; i can't take this episode. his broken heart

final episode
- HE TOOK FITZJAMES'S BOOTS????? OHHHH MYYY GODDDDDDD
- little so clearly looks like he wants to die ; n ; oh god i feel so bad for him.
- goodsir ;;;;;;
- something about transcendence, comfort?
- oh my god. jopson thinks that francis is leaving him behind. this is unbearable
- hickey & the tuunbaq. what do either of them want?
- mr. goodsir oh god. what are you doing? he's poisoning himself, isn't he? OH GOD HE IS T____T nooooo ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
- no, no, noooo. oh my god.
- lord god.
- it's crazy that they're still listening to hickey.
- oh holy christ, WHAT IS THIS
- it rejected hickey; hickey got a gruesome, unceremonious death; hickey was so poisonous that it killed the tuunbaq?
- why did de voeux get away?
- oh god. oh no. she saw what they did to mr. goodsir :c
- jopson :ccc
- :ccc

I thought that there would be a more obviously hopeful/restful ending because there was a series of "good" deaths - Fitzjames, Blanky, Peglar, Hartnell - where the characters had a choice, heard a farewell, and/or were mourned.

But what happened to Mr. Goodsir, Jopson, and Little was so sad and depressing. What they did to Goodsir, that gentle person, and butchered him afterward. Jopson died thinking that the captain abandoned him. And Little's fate was just bleak.

I'm still so disappointed in tozer. I thought he was a good one. He was so caring for his friend!!

It's amazing how in three episodes I went from not knowing and/or being willfully apathetic toward Brigends and Peglar, to feeling so many feelings about them. What a beautifully done, understated love story. for real ;;;;

I don't know what I expected, because "everybody dies" is a foregone conclusion. I guess I was hoping for more closure than I feel? I have to think about the ending more because I don't get it, lol. Still, it was very well made. and I knew nearly everyone's names and faces by the end!!!! goal achieved!!!!!

There was a quote about how sad endings are better accepted in theater rather than film because the audience sees the cast come out and bow at the end of a play, reassuring them, but you don't get that with film - unless there is a blooper reel that plays in the end credits.

In the spirit of that, I would very much like to see some more behind the scenes pics of the actors in costume, but smiling and happy and not dead and suffering ;;;;;;;

Okay I have been grappling with the three very sad deaths, because that's what really what made me feel the most bleak.
- Jopson/Little were thematic parallels that were of importance to the show, I guess? A lieutenant who died believing that his captain abandoned him, and a lieutenant who died after being forced to abandon his captain. But each of them were seen by that captain after death and will be remembered.
- Goodsir - he got to choose how he died and what effect that death would have on the people who wronged him. It's just so heartbreaking that it had to happen at the expense of his heart and faith in humanity. The A.V. club review also points out that his last vision is how his own mind comforts him at the end ;;;; I can accept that. & similar to how Crozier witnesses Jopson and Little, Silna witnesses Goodsir. He's seen and mourned.

There is honor and comfort given after their deaths. But how much they actually suffered at the end, the personal betrayal and breaking points they had to experience, is still upsetting to me :ccc

Also very galling is how Hickey robbed Fitzjames' body.

re: Hickey: everyone else is falling apart very literally, but he stays well-groomed and healthy. He doesn't seem affected by Goodsir's poison.

The fact that everyone still listens to him... I suppose it's like, "any order is better than none" and Hickey is psychotic, but he has vision and purpose. And he is literally the only one who can stand upright at the end.

Hickey's behavior on the ships makes more sense knowing that he was never in the Navy and has no idea wtf is going on lol

X-Men: First Class liveblog

i'm actually watching this movie and... it truly is gratifying to watch magneto hunt down nazis & nazi collaborators. less gratifying is the sexism that permeates the movie

lol @ "i'm a cool dad" magneto interrupting raven & hank just to be inappropriate and walking away immediately

it's charming to see the teens bond. that's the appeal of xmen, ppl find each other and build community and learn their powers, not necessarily for a purpose, but bc it's already a part of their lives

charles is such a fucking dumbass and he is a paternalistic prick to raven and he is soaked in privilege, but he does have a good heart and you do get the sense of his potential. like, once more Life happens to him. (this would not be an acceptable balance in Real Life, but it's fiction where that stuff matters more lol.) also mcavoy's natural charm really keeps the character afloat; it'd really be a tough sell otherwise.

emma's diamond form looks really bad T___T

on the other hand, shaw's mutation looks cool. kbacon is very good in this role

the attack on the cia compound is horrifying ;;; jennifer lawrence (frightened, showing her soft upbringing), zoe kravitz (wary & assessing), and edi gathegi (determination)'s acting choices in that scene are all really good.

it is utter bullshit that darwin dies. they went OUT OF THEIR WAY to do that, sf blatantly racist. especially that weird close up on him when shaw said "we've been enslaved". GOD

erik is a reckless dumbass. charles does help him considerably, and stops him from getting his charge-first self killed.

their scenes together are so charged and intimate. like, for real. I LOVE WHEN MEN CRY AT EACH OTHER LOL ;;;;;

this movie is truly just barrelling forwards. it should feel choppy, but it's not? it's fun.

i like how raven and charles really don't get each other and don't even know how much they don't understand, yet are so physically affectionate ;;

ik it sounds like i'm glossing over the sexism and racism, but the movie is an endless barrage of Things Happening. not complicated or hard to understand, but still it requires attn to keep up. there's no time to ruminate on stuff bc there's another Thing Happening on screen

erik has terrible trigger discipline. he's just waving that gun around! pointing it at the tv, the floor, wherever

poor raven, saying to hank the things that she desperately wishes someone would say to her ;;

why is hank so ill-defined as a character? nicholas hoult also doesn't have a lot of presence. i do feel sorry for him, even though he's chauvinistic; the insecurity, the innate horror of a self-inflicted damage on your body, being overlooked/taken for granted (on a meta level)

charles, you fucking idiot, TALK TO YOUR SISTER instead of trying to invalidate everything she says.

this movie really loves maps as a visual aid, lol

the final battle is well done. all good stuff

"they were just following orders" is just such a dumb, heavy handed line that i refuse to even ascribe to a character.

govts and militaries will not be honorable, Magneto Is Right abt humans' reactions to mutants, etc. but the better argument against blowing up all the ships, besides charles's innate objection to the loss of life, is that it would just throw a powder keg on the animosity towards mutants and escalate tensions 1000x further than they could properly defend against

erik is canny, but emotional and impulsive. his decisions are all based on anger.

anyway the beach divorce is legit painful. they both really sell their respective journeys.

the staging of it is, again, RIDICULOUSLY intimate. and did they deliberately make mcavoy look as young and blue-eyed as possible? like jesus christ. SO MUCH REPRESSED EMOTION. SO MANY UNSHED TEARS. MEN CRYING AT EACH OTHER.

moira immediately runs to charles and says "i'm sorry! i'm so sorry!" THAT'S WHAT YOU DO WHEN YOU HAVE MANNERS, ERIK

it's a real discredit to moira's character to have this tacked on domestic romance thing. and then she gets her memory wiped, AND THEN demeaned by her cia colleagues. like jfc.

"where's your telepath friend?"
"gone. left a bit of a gap in my life, if i'm to be honest. i was rather hoping you would fill it."
lol the innuendo is ridic here

the ppl that stay with charles are all young white american men, vs the ones who go with magneto - two women, one of whom is a woc, both with visible/external mutations; russian man; spanish man.

magneto's suit and cape look so cheesy lol. it's kind of nice that it looks cheap; baby's first homemade costume feel. i would really like to see the in-character thought process for it tho

there's a yt comment that has haunted me for weeks now: "I prefer .. Buritos."

i do like the end credits. i'll always be a sucker for graphic/kinetic animation.

re: Magneto Was Right: erik understands human nature and power structures, but he is short-sighted abt what actions to take to counter the future he sees. also he's too willing to sacrifice others and too unforgiving

charles is, of course, the opposite - too forgiving and complacent, and thus not able to address the root of the problem. but he is effective at achieving the goals he wants to achieve.

apparently there was a magneto origins movie that was ultimately scrapped and partially absorbed into first class. i LONG for it omg:
"[T]he script was set from 1939 to 1955, and it follows Magneto trying to survive in Auschwitz. He meets Xavier, a young soldier, during the liberation of the camp. He hunts down the Nazi war criminals who tortured him, and this lust for vengeance turns him and Xavier into enemies."

but not the holocaust part bc that seems really insensitive

what's funny abt the alt. timeline movies is that they are kinda on magneto's side, lol; they show erik's backstory and sympathize with his personal losses; plots always justify magneto's position bc the humans always do fuck mutants over; they give him Cool Stuff to do, etc

but i think that's mostly bc they want to take advantage of magneto's charisma and destructive tendencies, for the drama and Cool Fight Scenes lol; not as an endorsement of his radical politics

still, in contrast, i don't think an MCU movie with magneto would do the same. like they'd be more explicit abt condemning him as an Unacceptable Villain, like kilmonger in black panther
