Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Surprisingly, I really liked it! It had the usual skeevy sexist/misogynistic Apatow touch but it didn't feel as overwhelming to me as it did in his othar movies. There were only really two big "let's treat women as complete sexual objects and then laugh at them" moments that grossed me out, as opposed to, like, it being THE CONCEPT OF THE ENTIRE MOVIE. And the humor was not centered around a Seth Rogen/Jonah Hill type having overly confrontational monologues about cock and balls. Jason Segel wrote the script and was basically playing Marshall from HIMYM (or playing himself?) so it was something I actually thought was funny and charming. Yeah! OMG Jason Segel is so fucking endearing, I love the type of character he plays. Someone who doesn't engender sympathy by being a complete assbastard or an overly self-stylized "nice guy," yessssss. Bill Hader was really funny too. I forgot how good Kristen Bell was b/c of all the reports of how she's a bitch in real life. She's so fucking good though, and damnit, really cute and pretty. She plays things so real and I think the sympathy l'audience might have for Sarah Marshall was because of her ~skill~. (But to be fair the movie does do a good job of trying not to villify her.) Dude whenever she cries, I always sort of feel like crying along with her. And one thing I really liked and appreciated was how you can actually see why the estranged couple was once not estranged even though they spend most of their time onscreen being ~awkward~ around each other. Urrr. You know. Like you can see how they would've really gotten along (the flashblack clips and whotnot) besides the characters just telling each other "I fucking loved u once1!11!!" while you're sitting there thinking O RLY. PS, LOL at them spending 5 minutes mocking KBell's shitty horror movie. Last thing: Paul Rudd in his requisite cameo was PERFECT. Paul Rudd is so hot you guise.
pleasant surprises!
- Jack McBrayer! Playing... capable of swearing!Kenneth on vacation. Whatever, I don't complain.
- B&S's Get Me Away From Here I'm Dying!! When it came on I sort of freaked out and said "oh my God!" and looked around wildly. I don't know what I was expecting to findl maybe some girl who had also reacted to the B&S so we could share a ~secret smile~.
- Mila Kunis not being terrible. I think my hate-on for That 70s Show convinced me that she would be terrible, but she was pretty good actually and hella cute at times.
- Jason Bateman in the tag scene! WTF he just shows up anywhere he feels like. Totally fine by me.
- WTF was that Robert from Project Runway??
edit:
after trolling around wiki and imdb:
- LOL, the wiki for Judd Apatow says, "His male characters tend to be immature, lazy, misogynist, sex-crazed and drug-consuming slackers." IAWTC yo.
- OMG Jason Segel was in LolliLove?! The Office cast is hooked up EVERYWHERE. I loves it.
